As one of country music’s most patriotic artists and an outspoken supporter of the military, Toby Keith’s songs are often played during 4th of July gatherings and events. This year’s Independence Day will be a little somber for Keith’s fans, as it’s the first since his death on February 5.
Despite being one of country music’s most successful artists, Keith never moved to Nashville. Instead, he opted to remain in his home state of Oklahoma, even if it affected his career.
“I can go anywhere in the world I wanna go but after six or seven days, I’m like ‘I gotta get back to my ranch. I need to get back to my home,” he once said.
Keith was born in Clinton, Oklahoma, on July 8, 1961. His family briefly lived in Arkansas before moving back to Oklahoma while Keith was still young. They settled in Moore, a suburb of Oklahoma City.
As an adult, Keith remained in the area where he grew up and raised his own family there. He was a lifelong fan of The University of Oklahoma (otherwise known as OU), which all three of his kids attended.
Keith also founded his OK Kids Korral in Oklahoma City. The OK Kids Korral is a cost-free place for pediatric cancer patients and their families to stay while the child receives medical treatment.
Toby Keith Is Getting A 4th Of July Tribute From His Hometown
Keith’s hometown of Moore plans to honor him with a patriotic tribute on the 4th of July.
According to FOX23, Moore will pay tribute to Keith with “a synchronized fireworks show choreographed to his most beloved songs.” Moore announced that the 25-minute show will start at 9:45 PM on July 4 in Buck Thomas Park.
Moore’s Mayor, Mark Hamm, said:
“We are thrilled to present this special tribute to our own Toby Keith, whose music has touched the hearts and souls of people across the country. The 4th of July was one of Toby’s favorite holidays to celebrate. He would have his family, friends and people who worked for him over to his house for burgers, chips and fireworks. He invited all of us to celebrate America’s independence and to remember the men & women who are serving and have served to keep America free. We miss you, Toby.”
Guests are encouraged to arrive to the park early to get a spot for the show. Those watching from outside of the park can listen to the music on radio station KJTH (89.7 FM).
