Salman Khan became the first bone marrow donor of India after he pledged to save a little girl’s life in 2010.
Bollywood megastar Salman Khan is not only known for his super-successful films but also for his kind heart. Those who known him personally firmly vouch for the fact that he’s one of the better human beings and friends they’ve come across. While the ‘Sikandar’ actor continues to rule the roost with his movies, it is his humanitarian work that wins hearts in both India and abroad.
The actor’s foundation, Being Human, focuses on the education and healthcare of underprivileged communities in India. However, Salman Khan doesn’t just help people through his foundation. He simply believes in the idea of giving, as seen when he became the first bone marrow donor in the country.
Salman Khan donated his bone marrow to a little girl
Back in 2010, Salman Khan made headlines when he pledged to donate his bone marrow to the Marrow Donor Registry India (MDRI) to save a little girl named Pooja’s life. As per a report in Zee News, Dr. Sunil Parekh, who served on the board of MDRI at the time, confirmed the news
He was quoted saying, “There are people suffering from diseases and I thank Salman Khan for coming forward and taking up our cause. Four years ago, Salman had read about Pooja, a little girl who was in need of bone marrow transplant. He got his entire football team to come and donate marrow. Unfortunately, they all backed out, and only Salman and Arbaaz (Salman Khan’s brother) landed up donating and becoming the first donors.”
The superstar is known to have addressed the bone marrow donation problem in India at the time. He said, “We have only 5,000 donors currently. It’s not merely the lack of awareness; it’s our attitude that’s also the problem. And this will make us responsible for patients’ lives. Donate marrow and save a life. It’s just like a blood test and doesn’t take time. I know some people are scared of blood tests, too… but it’s time to become a little brave and make a big difference.”
Suniel Shetty calls Salman God’s favorite child
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama in 2022, one of Salman’s seniors, Suniel Shetty, mentioned how he is the most understood superstar in the industry. He added, “Salman Khan is a good human being and that’s why he talks that way. What did I do for him? I did nothing. Salman Khan donated his bone marrow many years ago to someone. Now that’s a man who wants a change in society and that’s why God is kind to him. God is taking care of him. He is God’s favorite child.”
